Abstract

1,092,667. Making bearings; welding by pressure. COOPER ROLLER BEARINGS CO. Ltd. July 25, 1966 [July 27, 1965], No. 31989/65. Addition to 1,001,988. Headings B3A and B3R. A method of making a race part of a split ball or roller bearing comprises shaping the race parts 10, 11, clamping the parts in juxtaposition to each other, welding the parts together at localized positions, machining, heat treating and grinding the race, and finally cutting out the weld metal. The parts 10, 11 are respectively placed in water-cooled copper V-blocks 20, 26 and the pressure applied by the V-block 26 flattens the ends of copper coated welding wires 21-24. An electric current is passed through the whole assembly, which heats and fuses the ends of the wires to the part 10, 11. After grinding, the weld metal is machined out by a thin saw or grinding wheel, Fig. 2 (not shown).
