Abstract
1,092,666. Blind riveting. TEXTRON INDUSTRIES Inc. April 15, 1965, No. 16289/65. Heading B3U. A tool for setting tubular blind rivets 6 by a break-off mandrel 7, 8 has an anvil 28 with a sharp edge 27 which swages material from the rivet head 4 into grooves in the mandrel after the blind head has been formed on the rivet. The tool comprises an outer sleeve 1 with a recess 3 which fits the rivet head 4. The sleeve 1 has an integral head 34 which slides in the end 33 of a housing 31 which is screwed to the body of a pulling tool. A set of jaws 17 are mounted in a holder 12 connected to a drawbolt 11 which is screwed to a reciprocable shaft 46 of the pulling tool. The anvil 28 has a tubular extension 29 which is slidable in the outer sleeve 1 and which abuts a shoulder 44 in a back-up tube 36 which is screwed into the body of the pulling tool. A spring 42 biases a locking tube 38 to a forward position, Fig. 1 (not shown) in which a set of balls 37 are held between the head 34, the coned end 35 of the back-up tube and the radiused end 41 of the locking tube 38. Operation.-The tool is applied to the rivet and the blind head is formed in the usual way. Further pulling of the stem 7 causes the spring 42 to yield so that the balls 37 move outwardly and backwardly along the coned end 35 of the back-up tube 36. The outer sleeve 1 thus moves relative to the housing 31 and the tubular extension 29 of the anvil so that the full pressure of the tool is applied to the anvil. The sharp edge 27 moves into engagement with the head 4 of the rivet and swages material into the grooves of the stem 7.
