Abstract

1,092,525. A/D converters. CONTRAVES A.G. Nov. 25, 1964 [Dec. 4, 1963; Sept. 22, 1964, No. 47934/64. Heading G4H. [Also in Division G1] In apparatus for measuring relative position of two objects of the type in which a plurality of phasedisplaced cyclic signals are produced, the signals are applied to polarity discriminators and the condition combination of the polarity discriminators is used to interpolate the relative position between cycles. The outputs of photo-cells 41, 42, 43 producing signals mutually spaced by 120 degrees are applied to a differencing amplifier DV to suppress the common components. The amplifier outputs Ub 1 , Ub 2 , Ub 3 , are combined in various proportions by summing resistors O to provide signals at phase positions O, 3E/10, 4E/10, 6E/10, 7E/10 where E is the wavelength of the pattern. These signals are applied to polarity discriminators ST1-ST5 giving a binary indication of the signal polarity. The output of ST1-ST5 is an indication in a five-bit code of the position of the pattern to the nearest E/10. The indication may be transformed into a decimal indication in the 4 : 2 : 2 :1 four-bit code disclosed in British Specification 1,005,054, and movements of the pattern may be indicated by decade stages DS1-DS5. The pattern may be a transmissive or reflective scale viewed through slits, or it may be produced by superimposed gratings of the same or different pitch.
