1,091,974. Measuring oil in oily water - photo-electrically. MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. March 29, 1965 [March 30, 1964], No.13305/65. Heading G1A. The concentration of oil in oily water, such as the oil remaining in water to be discharged from a ship's bunkers after passing through a separator, is determined by emulsifying the oil in the water and comparing the amounts of light from a source 101 transmitted and scattered by the emulsion 103 and measured by the photo-cells r 1 , r 2 . The cells may form a bridge with resistances R 1 , R 2 , an indicator being connected between points a, b. The emulsion may be formed by the application of ultrasonic energy, different frequencies being used for different oils. An unacceptable oil concentration may cause the discharge to be interrupted automatically, the water being returned to the separator for further treatment.
