Abstract

1,091,661. Mechanical storage apparatus. W. H. O. DEVELOPMENT Ltd. March 22, 1965 [March 21, 1964], No. 12050/64. Heading B8E. Apparatus which may be used for storage in general but which is primarily intended for the storage of cars comprises upper and lower rows of pallets 11, 12, Fig. 1, there being one less pallet 12 than the number of pallets 11 so that a gap is provided beneath one of the pallets 11, the pallets 12 being movable to selectively position the gap under any one of the pallets 11 and the latter being movable vertically so that the selected one thereof can be lowered into the gap while the remainder are supported on the pallets 12. The latter have wheels 13 running on rails 14 and each has an upper structure 15 for supporting legs 16 on the pallets 11 which, however, are normally supported on beams 17 extending one on each side of the upper row and each being connected for vertical movement to a plurality of chains 21, these extending over pulleys 22 and being secured to a horizontally movable bar 23. For moving the bars 23 a chain 24 extends from the end of each round a pulley 25 to a common winch 26. The cars are driven on to and off the pallets which are disposed in a housing 10, and to prevent movement of the pallets 12 when a car is being so driven, a photo-electric cell is provided at one end of each side of the housing 10, each cell co-operating with a light at the other end of the housing and being arranged in an appropriate circuit. The pallets 12 are individually moved by an endless chain, each pallet having means for selectively engaging the chain, and the latter carries a switch for controlling reversible drive means for the chain, the switch having a drop arm which co-operates with the gap in the row of pallets 12.
