Abstract

Micro-cracked chromium is cathodically deposited from an aqueous solution containing 100 to 200 g/l of chromic acid and, based on the chromic acid content, 0.1 to 0.3% sulphate ion and 1.5 to 4% silicofluoride ion, the silicofluoride ion content being greater than 2% if the sulphate ion content is less than 0.2%. Preferably the solution contains less than 8 g/l of metallic impurities such as iron, zinc or copper, e.g. resulting from dissolutio of articles to be plated. If a larger amount of impurities is present the solution should contain more than 0.25% of sulphate ion and more than 2% of silicofluoride ion. The bath may contain strontium sulphate in excess of its bath solubility and an innocuous strontium salt such as the chromate to suppress the solubility of the strontium sulphate and maintain the desired sulphate ion concentration. Typically the chromium is deposited at a current density of 160 amps/ft2 on steel panels which have been previously electroplated with bright nickel, the bath being used at 112 DEG F. Reference is made to liquid concentrates for making up the baths by mere dilution and to solid mixtures for dissolution to form the baths.
