Abstract

Diesters of a synthetic carboxylic acid and a polyoxyalkylene diol (see Division C2) are used as base lubricating oils or as lubricants with a mineral oil and/or another synthetic oil such as a simple or hindered ester or a synthetic hydrocarbon. The synthetic carboxylic acid used to prepare the ester is made by reacting at least one mono-olefine with carbon monoxide and water, or with carbon monoxide or formic acid in the absence of water but in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The acids are mainly <FORM:1091457/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, R3 a hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, and may be isomeric mixtures, preferably from a C4 to C8 monoolefine. The diols may be <FORM:1091457/C4-C5/2> where n is at least 2, prepared from alkylene oxide. Examples describe lubricating compositions using the diesters with additional components 10, benzyl-3,7-dioctyl phenothiazine, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, chlorinated diphenyl, triphenyl phosphorothionate, 3-amino - 5 - phenyl - 1,2,4 - triazole, azelaic acid, silicone, mineral oil, 4,41-methylene bis (2,6- di-t-butyl phenol), pp1-dioctyl diphenylamine, zinc dibutyl dithiophosphate, calcium petroleum sulphonate, and copolymers of propylene and ethylene oxide.ALSO:The invention comprises diesters of synthetic carboxylic acids and polyoxyalkylene diols. The acids are prepared by reacting at least one mono-olefine (e.g. C4-C18) with carbon-monoxide and water or with carbon monoxide or formic acid in the absence of water but in the presence of an acidic compound as catalyst to yield an intermediate product which is then reacted with water to give the acid. Mixed monoolefines from thermal cracking of hydrocarbons may be used. The acids may be an isomeric mixture and are mainly R1.R2.R3.C. COOH where R1 and R2 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups; R3 a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group. The preferred diol is a polyoxyalkylene glycol such as HO-CH2-CH2(OCH2CH2)n-OH where is at least 2 and may be prepared from at least one alkylene oxide. The diesters are prepared by conventional methods and examples describe the reaction of the acid chloride of an isomeric C9 synthetic carboxylic acid with polyoxyethylene glycol HO-CH2.CH2.(OCH2 CH2)2-OH, and of the acid chloride of an isomeric C5 synthetic carboxylic acid with the polyoxyethlene glycol HO-CH2.CH2.(OCH2 CH2)6-OH. The esters are used as base lubricating oils or as lubricant additives.
