Abstract

The method and apparatus described in Specification 1,075,444 for carding fibres is used to tear and open rag. Preferably a machine of the tyre illustrated in Fig. 2 of the Provisional drawings of the above Specification is used followed by a machine as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the provisional drawing. With rag it may be possible to use only one "swift" and to use fewer "worker" rollers per "swift". The rollers are made light and are arranged to be relatively movable so that hard objects such as buttons may pass through without damaging the card clothing. Garnett wire is preferably used on the rollers but pins could be used in which case they are arranged in rows so that pins of opposed rollers can be set into each other.
