Abstract
Textile materials are produced from nonwoven fabrics by the application of (a) an emulsion or dispersion of a synthetic polymer containing reactive groups and (b) a solution of an aldehyde and either a phenol or an amine, which solution has a pH of less than 7, followed by treatment to condense the applied materials. The polymer may be a synthetic rubber, e.g. a butadiene-styrene copolymer containing carboxyl groups, or a polyacrylate; in the former case the condensation step may serve also to vulcanize the synthetic rubber. The reactive groups may be carboxy, amino or hydroxyl groups. The phenol may be phenol or cresol; the amine may be urea, cyanamide, dicyandiamide or melamine. The bonding agent may also contain fillers, dyes and/or vulcanizing agents, or a catalyst for the condensation, such as ammonium chloride, an organic acid or the addition product of urea and hydrogen peroxide. The solution (b) may be applied before or after the emulsion or dispersion (a), or they may be mixed and applied together. In a modification, the aldehyde and the phenol or amine are applied in separate solutions, each having a pH of less than 7. The fabric may undergo a preliminary drying before the condensation. The impregnation may be superficial or throughout the thickness of the web. In the Examples the fibres of the web are of rayon staple or a mixture of polyacrylonitrile, polyamide and xanthate cellulose.
