Abstract

1,090,360. Motor vehicle controls. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Oct. 12, 1966, No. 45631/66. Heading B7H. A pivoted control lever 9 projecting rearwardly from the padded dashboard 5 of a motor vehicle is retained in its axial position by means releasable under the impact of an occupant of the vehicle on the lever to permit the lever to move axially and forwardly until its free end is approximately flush with the dashboard. The lever 9 is axially positioned in a sleeve 51 by a U-shaped spring clip 57 which extends through diametrically opposite slots (53, Fig. 5, not shown) to engage in a circumferential groove (55) in the lever and is forced out of the groove to permit forward displacement of the lever when sufficient axial load is exerted thereon. The sleeve 51 is attached to a clevis 41 pivoted on a pin 43 secured in a rotatable sleeve 23 which carries a crank 27 connected to a Bowden cable 29 and is rotated by pivoting the lever 9 in a vertical plane to control an automatic transmission through the cable 29. A bore 49 through the sleeve 23 accommodates forward displacement of the lever 9. A spring 69 tending to pivot the lever 9 about the pin 43 biases the lever into lateral recesses in a gate arrangement (Fig. 7, not shown) formed in a plate 59.
