Abstract

Elastomeric block copolymers are made having the formula A-B-A in which each A is a polymer block of a conjugated diene having from 4-10 carbon atoms and an average molecular weight of 40,000 to 250,000 and B is a polymer block of a conjugated diene having from 4-10 carbon atoms and different from that of block A and having an average molecular weight of 100,000 to 1,000,000. The block copolymers are made by (a) polymerizing a C4-C10 diene in an inert hydrocarbon solvent using the required amount of secondary alkyl lithium initiator, calculated on the basis of one alkyl lithium radical per growing polymer chain, so as to obtain a molecular weight of the final polymer chain of 40,000 to 250,000, (b) adding to the same reaction mixture a different C4-C10 diene, (c) continuing polymerizatio until substantially no unpolymerized diene remains, (d) adding to the same reaction mixture a C4-C10 diene different from the diene used in step (b), and (e) continuing polymerization to form an A-B-A block copolymer. Dienes specified are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, dimethylbutadiene, 1,3-hexadiene and chloroprene. The block copolymer may be after-treated by hydrogenation or may be blended with block copolymers of the formula E-D-E in which E is a non-elastomeric polymer block of a vinyl arene or vinyl pyridine and D is an elastomeric conjugated diene polymer block. The example describes the preparation of polybutadiene-polyisoprene-polybutadiene block copolymers using secondary butyl lithium as a catalyst.
