Abstract

<PICT:1090139/C1/1> A desiccant block 6 for use in refrigerant circuits having broader end 6b rests on washer 9 in a container 1 having inlet 3 and outlet 4. A cavity in the block is filled with a loose desiccant 7 and is covered with material 6a, plate 10 being kept in place by spring 8. Refrigerant passes round the side of the plate 10 and passes into the block from the sides and out at the bottom. In Fig. 2 (not shown), instead of plate 10, the space round the sides of the block and on top are filled with additional desiccant (11), the whole being covered by perforated plate (12), held in position by spring 8. Preferred desiccants are silica gel for the block 6, this being compacted with a binder, a molecular sieve for 7 and active carbon or alumina for (11). The material (11) is said to prevent oil sludge, oil carbon, and acids from coming into contact with the main adsorber. The whole is said to have a filtering as well as adsorbing action. The binder may be a thermosetting resin which is initially liquid and then polymerized after addition to the drying agent, or else a solution of a suitable resin. The cover-plate 6a may have the same composition as the block, and may likewise be applied to the top of the block in unpolymerized condition.
