Abstract

Acyclic olefines are disproportionated in the presence of a catalyst made by impregnating freshly precipitated Al2O3 with an oxide of W or Re, a compound of W or Re decomposable thereto or a carbonyl of Mo or W. If desired the catalyst may be activated by thermal treatment in an inert and/or oxidizing gas. Olefines mentioned are C3- 30 alkene, e.g. propylene, butenes-1 and -2, pentenes-1 and -2, hexenes-1, -2 and 3, heptenes-1, -2 and -3 and octenes. An example describes the disproportionation of propylene to ethylene and butene.ALSO:Freshly precipitated Al2O3 gel is impregnated with WO3 or Re2O7, or a precursor therefor, or a carbonyl of Mo or W. The finished catalyst may be 30-60 B.S.S. particle size and may be used in a fixed or fluidised bed. The catalyst may be activated by a thermal treatment in an inert and/or oxidising gas.
