In a nursery gate carried by pivots to be raisable while remaining pivotally mounted to have freedom of tilting movement for release, latch pins 2 at the closing side of the gate have one or more notches 3a formed in a plastic sleeve on the pins 2, and interlocking with the fixed eye 4 when tilting of the gate occurs, to prevent the gate from being raised to the point of release and unfastening. A turnbutton 7, 8, engages the lower side of the eye 4 to prevent any raising of the gate. The eye 4 may be magnetised. Two latch pins 2, each provided with the notches, and selected for use according to direction of desired swing of the gate are arranged to prevent swing in the undesired direction. Pivot arrangements Fig. 7 to allow tilting of the gate by raising the open ing and comprise elongated eyes 16a on the gate engaged over a pivot pin 18 or an elongated loop on the gate-carrying member through which passes an upright member (Fig. 5) on the gate. A compression spring 19 on the pivot pin 18 urges the gate downwardly to increase the amount of upward force required for unfastening the gate.
