Abstract

1,089,415. Operating sliding windows. BECKETT, LAYCOCK & WATKINSON Ltd. April 4, 1966 [April 13, 1965], No. 15794/ 65. Heading E2M. The movement of a sliding window pane 12, of a window of the type having a spindle 16 mounted transversely to the sliding movement of the pane and pinions 15 mounted on the spindle for engagement with racks 14, is prevented by the use of coil springs 22, 23 each having one end fixed and being mounted concentrically on the spindle. Means for expanding the springs to release the spindle permit the pane to be moved are provided in the form of a cam 28 whose surfaces 29, 30 can be made to engage the free ends 24, 25 of the springs and expand the latter, the cam being operated by means of knob 27. A stop 31 is provided to prevent rotation of the cam surfaces, beyond the point at which the expansion of the springs is sufficient to release the spindle. A ball detent 32 is also provided to positively locate the cam in each of its two extreme positions. The window may be modified by having (a) an horizontally, instead of a vertically, sliding pane; (b) only one coil spring; (c) manual means for rotation of the spindle, instead of hand grip 13, to move the pane; (d) only one rack and pinion; and (e) the spindle moving with the pane whilst the racks remain stationary, instead of vice versa.
