Abstract

1,088,719. Inverting. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Oct. 8, 1965 [Oct. 22, 1964], No. 42787/65. Heading H2F. [Also in Division H3] A power amplifier for use in the modulating system described in Specification 1,082,325 comprising a pair of electronic switches 531 and 532 connected in feed paths from potential sources U31 and U32 to a resonant load LCR, the switches being controlled by width-modulated pulses to give an amplitude modulated sine wave output, is characterized by the provision of auxiliary electronic switches H31 and H32 which protect S31 and S32 from surge voltages produced by the inductance L. It is arranged that H31 is conductive except when S31 conducts and H32 is conductive except when S32 conducts. Diodes D31, D32 in series with H31 and H32 have the same pass directions as their associated transistors which they protect from reverse voltage, and diodes D33, D34 ensure that reverse voltages are applied across the diodes D31 and D32 instead of across the transistors. Diodes D33 and D34 may be replaced by resistances, and all the diodes D31-D34 may be omitted if thermionic valves or four-layer semi-conductor diodes replace the transistors H31 and H32. The diodes G31 and G32 protect S31 and S32 under abnormal conditions. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a single potential source U5 is connected alternately by S51 and S52 to two halves of an input winding of a transformer T5 feeding the load; the auxiliary switches H51 and H52 and their associated diodes are connected across the two halves of the input winding. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a potential source U6 feeds a bridge circuit including four switching devices S61-S64, and the auxiliary switches H62 and H63 are connected across the output diagonal of the bridge. In further modifications, Fig. 7 and 8 (not shown), the auxiliary switches are connected in series with their respective main switches, diodes being used to connect the junctions to one end of the load or output circuit.
