Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions contain as extreme pressure agent an oil-soluble reaction product prepared by reaction of a chloroalkyl phosphite and an overbased alkaline earth metal salt selected from a sulphonate (e.g. petroleum or aromatic sulphonate) and a phenate. Suitable oils are mineral oils, synthetic ester lubricants and polymer lubricants. The complexes may be combined with detergents, viscosity index improvers, antioxidants and antifoamers.ALSO:An oil-soluble reaction product is obtained by reaction of a chloroalkyl-phosphite and an overbased alkaline earth metal salt selected from a sulphonate and a phenate. The reaction is accomplished by mixing the reactants and heating them, preferably at a temperature between 50 DEG and 95 DEG C., until a homogeneous solution is obtained. Suitable chloroalkylphosphites include the mono-, bis-, and trichloroalkylphosphates where the alkyl group may contain from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and the chlorine atom is preferably attached to the a - or b -position of the alkyl radical. The phosphites may contain mixed alkyl groups. The overbased metal sulphonates and phenates are those in which excess metal has been combined with the normal metal salts and the sulphonates may be petroleum or aromatic sulphonates. The compounds have extreme pressure properties and are useful in lubricating oil compositions.
