Abstract

1,088,321. Bearings, lubricating. SHEFFIELD CORPORATION. Nov. 10, 1964 [Nov. 29, 1963], No. 45790/64. Heading F2A. A fluid bearing comprises sensing means responsive to the size of the distance between opposed bearing surfaces and which regulates control means controlling the flow of fluid supplied between the bearing surfaces. In Fig. 2 air from supply line 21 and pressure regulator 22 passes through line 28 and pressure relay 27, which is provided with valve 32, to outlet 35 and serves to separate the bearing surfaces 13, 16. Air also passes through restrictor 23 and line 25 to orifice 26, the back pressure generated in the line 25 resulting in a deflection of diaphragm 31 of relay 27. Thus a decrease in the distance between the bearing surfaces 13, 16 causes an increase in back pressure which deflects diaphragm 31 and further opens valve 32, and increases the flow of air to separate the surfaces, and vice versa. Constant spacing between the surfaces is thus maintained. Separate bearing zones are provided (Fig. 3, not shown) each bounded by air channels in surface 16 leading to atmosphere, and comprising an area with outlets and one or more sensing orifices. The fluid supply to each zone is controlled independently. The embodiment relates to supporting a tailstock of a grinding machine.
