Abstract

A gas permeable laminated sheet comprises a coherent fibrous layer and an adherent microporous layer of a block copolymer having segments of a polyamide and a polymeric substance having a melting point of less than 80 DEG C. The microporous layer may permeate the fibrous layer. The segments of the polymeric substance may be derived from the group consisting of polyetetramethylene oxide, polyethylene oxide and polybutadiene. The microporous layer may comprise a mixture of the block copolymer and an elastomer which is immiscible with the copolymer in the solid state. The block copolymer may have grafted side chains of an elastomer. The laminated sheet may be produced by applying a solution of the block copolymer to the coherent fibrous layer, precipitating the copolymer from the solution to form a gel containing residual solvent and reducing the solvent content of the gel at a temperature below the glass temperature of the gel, whereby the copolymer tends to aggregate in interconnected micelles, generating pores in the gel. Alternatively, the copolymer may be precipitated from the solution to form a gel containing residual solvent and the gel subsequently applied to the coherent fibrous layer, e.g. by transfer from another surface, and then the solvent content of the gel reduced as before. The gel may be precipitated by cooling the solution of the block copolymer. The copolymer may be dissolved in the continuous phase of an emulsion of an elastomer immiscible with the copolymer in the solid state, whereby the gel precipitated from the solution entrains particles of the elastomer. The fibres of the coherent fibrous layer may be lubricated, e.g. with a silicone, prior to the application of the microporous layer. The fibrous layer may be a porous, bonded, non-woven felt of crimped nylon fibres. The solution may be applied by knife spreading.
