A machine for attaching pronged fasteners 10, together with a backing plate 12 and a reinforcing tape 302, to a fabric comprises a feed mechanism 300 for the tape having a rocker 330 mounted on a slide 318 reciprocable adjacent a tape guideway 316, the slide being actuated by a compressed air cylinder 400 so that in one position, drive pins 340 on the rocker are in feeding engagement with the tape and in another position of the rocker the drive pins are withdrawn from the tape. The slide is reciprocated in a slot 328 by means of an arm 325 connected to the ram 404 of the air cylinder. The ram is also adapted to actuate, via bars 416, 412, slides 104, 176. The slide 104 is provided with a spring-loaded pawl 116 which is arranged to move a pronged fastener 10 from the lower end of a shoot 47 on to the bottom of a ram 30 where it is held by magnets; the movement of the fasteners 10 down the shoot is controlled by an escapement device 46 actuated by the ram 30. The slide 176 is provided with a blade for removing the backing plates one at a time from the lower end of a magazine 170 and feeding them into a support block 156. Both slides are fitted with handles 140, 220 so that they may be manually actuated in the event of a fastener becoming jammed. The support block 156 is secured to a table 150 and is provided with pivoted levers (13, Fig. 5) which are arranged to coact with a fixed thrust plate (162) in order to clench over the legs of the pronged fastener. The slides 104, 176 are adapted to actuate switches 430 at the completion of their strokes thereby completing a control circuit for the actuation of a compressed-air cylinder 26 for driving the ram 30. The mechanism for actuating the main control switch is foot-operated and is also arranged to operate a safety guard.
