Abstract
A luminescent material is composed of silicon, oxygen, one or more of the alkaline earth metals, barium, strontium or calcium, one or both of the halogens fluorine and chlorine and divalent europium, the latter 0.5 to 20%, preferably 1-5%, by weight of the material, the material being excited by U.V. radiation of 2537< >rA and 3650< >rA, by cathode rays and X-rays. A method of manufacturing is described in which the mixture is heated in a reducing atmosphere of hydrogen or hydrogen and nitrogen mixture at a temperature 825 DEG to 975 DEG C. The preferred material is strontium chlorosilicate and an X-ray analysis of the crystal structure is given. The temperature dependence of luminescence is only very slight up to 300 DEG C. Specific starting mixtures are described including Ca + Cl, Ba + Cl, and Sr + F. Incorporation of material in electrical devices, such as high-pressure and low-pressure mercury lamps, X-ray screens and cathode-ray tubes is mentioned.
