Animal traps.-A snare for catching rabbits and like animals alive is provided with a base portion a, with anchoring-spikes a', carrying an upstanding pocket or pockets b adapted to receive the snare proper e, f. The snare proper comprises two lengths of wire e, f, secured to each other at their ends by linke i, i<1> and each being bowed in the middle and passing two or more times round a pivot pin h so as normally to take up the position shown in Fig. 3, a freely sliding ring K encircling the wires where they cross each other. The extreme lower ends of the wires e<2>, f<2> are bent back at right-angles, and coiled springs j, j<1> are mounted on the bent-back portions, the free ends of the springs being continued to form handles j<4>, j'. In setting the trap, the ends e<2>, f<2> of the wires are forced together so that the noose space g is widened, and the springs j, j<1> are inserted in the pockets b, the ends c<2>, f<2> being held together by a releasing catch n. The handles j<4>, j<5> of the springs are given a turn and secured against projections on the base. The springs tend to turn the snare upwards about the axis of the springs, but this tendency is restrained by a trip lever l on the base passing over the crossing of the wires c, f and engaging under a projection m on the tread-plate d. When the trip-lever is released by an animal stepping on the tread-plate, the snare swings upwards about the axis of the springs until the catch n engages and is detached by a short post c. The wires e, f then spring outwards, securing the animal in the noose part g. In a modification, the wires may be rigid and the links i, i<1> replaced by springs. In another modification, the noose portion g is caused to contract by springs round the pivot pin h.
