Abstract

1,087,225. Power steering. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and G. C. LEIGH. Sept. 22, 1964 [Oct. 8, 1963], No. 39656/63. Heading B7H. A power steering system for an invalid chair comprises a pump 21 driven through a flexible cable 22 from an electric motor 23 operated by the vehicle battery 6, the pump having an output line 27 leading to a line 24 supplying one end of a power cylinder 19 and to a line 17 leading to a control valve 9 which is connected by a line 16 to the other end of the cylinder 19 and by a line 18 to the reservoir 20. In the mid position of the valve, Fig. 4, throttle apertures 29, 29A between the valve spool and control edges allow for a reduced pressure in the lines 17 and 24 and a small build-up of pressure in line 16, such that, these pressures acting upon the faces of the piston of unequal area, a dynamic balance is achieved. By moving the valve spool 8 to the left, the pressure will increase in line 17 to move the piston, and by moving the spool 8 to the right, the pressure in line 16 will increase, and, acting upon the piston face of greater area, will move the piston in the opposite direction. The piston rod is connected to a rack 32 which acts upon a pinion 33 connected to a shaft 34 for steering the wheel 4 which is also the driving wheel of the vehicle. The valve 9 may be contained within a housing 35 and is operated by a lever 7, very small movements of which produce the required steering. A contact arm may be fixed to the shaft 34 and co-operate with a series of electrical contacts so as to register the direction of steering upon a dial mounted adjacent the housing 35.
