Abstract

1,087,198. Contacting immiscible liquids; continuous mixing apparatus. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 21, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963 (2)], No. 38513/64. Headings B1C and B1F. [Also in Division G6] In apparatus for the countercurrent contacting of two immiscible liquids in stages, each stage comprises a mixing section 1 and a settling section 2 and is provided with a removable agitator 8 driven by an electric motor, and the lower part of each mixing section receives the liquids to be contacted through inlets 16, 17. The heavier liquid enters the mixing section from an adjacent settling section via apertures 20 and 19 and the lighter liquid enters via aperture 18. An apertured dividing plate 5 assists mixing and circulation of the liquids. The mixture passes via aperture 12 to the settling section which is provided with perforated plate 15 to break up any emulsion. The agitator 8 (Figure 2, not shown) comprises two frusto-conical members 9, 10 connected at their large bases by a bar. In a modification (Figures 8-12, not shown), an entry channel for the two liquids is provided at the base of each mixing section. The agitator in this modification comprises upper and lower plates connected by four radial blades. The apparatus may be used for the separation of fission products from aqueous uranium or plutonium solutions by extraction with an organic phase (see Division G6). Extraction, washing, and re-extraction of the organic phase take place in different parts of the apparatus, which may be constructed of polyethylene stabilised with carbon black and may be of flat parallelepiped shape, each mixing and settling section being of sub-critical size.
