A door closer of the type which can be concealed within the door or door jamb has a cylinder 1, in which a piston 6 moves, connected to one leaf of a hinge and a linkage 13, which is connected by means of a crosshead 12 to a piston-rod 10, connected to the other leaf of the hinge. When the door is opened the piston 6 slides in the cylinder compressing the spring 7, the oil-.flows from one side to the other through a groove 32 or through a port 18 and passed a non-return valve 19 to fill cylinder bore 17 which has been withdrawn from a piston 25. When the hinge is released the piston returns to its original position at a speed controlled by the leakage of oil through a needle restrictor 30 by passing the valve 19.
