A method of automatically returning a outting-off tool 2 is characterized by the cutting tool, such as a grinding wheel, after cutting off the workpiece 2 interrupting a stream of fluid 23 to cause a control impulse which returns the tool to its inoperative position. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a grinding wheel 1 is rotatably carried at the end of an arm which is movable about a pivot by a pneumatic jack to advance and retract the wheel relative to the workpiece 2 mounted on a pedestal 3. The pedestal has a slot 13 for receiving the wheel after it has cut through the workpiece and a pipe 4 has a nozzle 15 for directing the stream of fluid across the slot into a duct 5 connected to a diaphragm switch 6 which, when the stream is interrupted by the wheel, actuates a magnetic valve 7 controlling a reversing valve 8 in the circuit to the pneumatic jack.
