Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A flame desurfacing apparatus is controlled so as selectively to remove defects from the surfaces of workpieces, by dividing the workpiece surface into reference areas, recording the position of these areas and of any with defects therein on an information carrier, and using the latter to control the desurfacing apparatus. The depth of any defects may be also recorded for subsequent control of the oxygen supply to the burner. The workpiece surface is divided into reference areas by a metal net spread over the surface or by a network projected thereon by light beams. The information is then stored on a punched card, perforated tape or magnetic tape which may be fed into a computer controlling the apparatus. The workpiece may have a circular or rectangular cross-section.
