Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons including o- and p-xylenes are obtained by passing a C2-C5 aliphatic aldehyde over a dehydration catalyst at 300-600 DEG C. The catalyst may be aluminosilicates, alumina or mixtures of alumina with oxides of elements of Groups 1-4 or 6-8. Reaction times of 1 second-1 minute are used. An inert gas, water or a halogen may be present. Examples describe the use of crotonaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
