Abstract
1,085,972. Soldering. P. J. GILL. Jan. 6, 1966 [Jan. 19, 1965], No. 2230/65. Heading B3R. A tool for applying heat to workplaces to produce a soldered joint comprises two pivotally connected lever arms each carrying a thermally conductive bit, spring means engaging the arms to bias the bits together and electrical heating means for heating the bits. Each lever arm 11, Fig. 1, is of hollow rectangular cross-section formed of channel section members 12 and midway along the length of each arm a recess 18 is provided which does not extend across the entire width of the arm and has an arcuate bottom surface, a bearing piece 21 in the form of a short annular member being engaged in the opposed recesses of the arms. A handle 14 of insulating material is provided in the end 27 of each of the arms through which extends the electrical supply lead 16 which supplies an electrical heating element 26 in the other end 28 of the arm. Extending from the end 28 of each arm is a solid or laminated replaceable copper or copper alloy bit 29 having an arcuate recess 32, the bit being in contact with the heating element. On the outer side 39 of each arm at the end 28 is engaged the free end of a U- shaped spring 41, the base 42 of the spring passing through clearance apertures 43 in each arm below the bearing piece 21. The spring holds the assembly of arms and bearing piece and urges the bits together. Solder is provided in the grooved end of a socket and when the socket is received between the bits and heated thereby the solder will flow. The tool may be used with a tool rest which includes a thermally responsive switch in a holder engaged by the bits so that the temperature of the bits may be automatically regulated. Alternatively the rest may have a controller responsive to the weight of the tool so that when the tool is supported by the rest the rate of supply of electrical energy is reduced. A flat faced bit may be employed to solder flat plates of metal.
