Abstract

Ink mixture contained in the pores of a transfer layer of a typewriter ribbon consists of carbon black with dye precipitate, ingrosine oleate, methyl violet base and mixed fatty acid esters. The mixture is made by passing the first three items above through a dispersion mill, then adding the fatty acid esters and mixing in a disperser. Graphite may be mixed with the ink mixture. The ink mixture is dispersed with graphite in a solution of nylon in alcohol. This dispersion is then dried to form the porous transfer layer.ALSO:The transfer layer of a typewriter ribbon consists of an ink mixture in the pores of a graphite-filled nylon layer. The layer is made by adding the nylon to heated denatured ethyl alcohol and agitating to dissolve the nylon, the solution is cooled and graphite and an ink mixture is then dispersed in the solution, this dispersion is coated on to a polyethylene terephthalate substrate and dried to form the layer. A support layer consisting of carbon-filled nylon can be formed on the transfer layer and the polyethylene terephthalate substrate removed. The ink mixture consists of carbon black with dye precipitate, nigrosine oleate, methyl violet base and mixed fatty acid esters and optionally graphite, and is formed by dispersion.ALSO:Ink transfer medium comprises a synthetic resin transfer layer having pores containing ink which can be expressed from the layer, and an exposed support layer bonded to the transfer layer, the support being formed of a synthetic resin having a filler which forms a matrix of intermolecular bonds with the resin of the support. The support may be of a polyamide, e.g. nylon, and the filler may be carbon black, e.g. channel or furnace black. The transfer layer can contain a filler, e.g. graphite. The transfer medium is made by forming a fluid mixture of the support resin, support filler and dispersant and coating a transfer layer with this mixture then drying the fluid mixture. The transfer layer can be formed by applying a mixture of a transfer layer resin, e.g. nylon, ink and a dispersant therefor, to a temporary substrate, e.g. polyethylene terephthate ribbon, and drying the transfer layer mixture, the temporary substrate is then stripped off, e.g. after applying the support layer. The mixtures can be applied by roller. In the example the dry transfer layer is 0.0006-0.002\yF thick and the dry support layer is 0.0001-0.001\yF thick.
