A hard metal consists of tungsten carbide and 3-20% of a Co-alloy as binder; the Co-alloy has the following composition:- .Co.20-75% .Cr.4-50% .Ni.up to 45% .W.up to 20% .Mo.up to 5% .Fe.up to 5% .Si.up to 0.5% .B.up to 2% .C.0.01-5% .Ti.up to 2.5% .Zr.up to 6% .Nb.up to 3% .V.up to 2% .Ta.up to 3% Up to 20% of the tungsten carbide may be replaced by one or more of titanium carbide, molybdenum carbide, tantalum carbide, niobium carbide and hafnium carbide.
