Abstract
1,085,021. Yarns. JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd. Jan. 14, 1965 [Jan. 20, 1964], No. 2415/64. Headings D1D, D1F and D1W. In producing a yarn of "variable character", i.e. a yarn varying in colour, texture or bulk along its length a composite sliver of variable character is assembled and subjected to a drafting process in which the draft applied varies with time. As described slivers 1, 2, 3 which may differ in colour, type of fibre, and/or bulk, are fed to drafting frame 16, sliver 1 continuously and at least one of slivers 2 and 3 intermittently by rollers 22, 28 driven through cam-controlled magnetic clutches. The speed of back rollers 14, 15 is varied cyclically by means of a drive comprising expanding pulley 44, V-belt 47 and a pulley 49 reciprocated by eccentric 51. Alternatively the back rollers may be driven by the front rollers, or vice versa, through a variable speed device such as a double cone and belt drive under appropriate cam control.
