Abstract

[Also in Division F2] The pressure of gas flowing to a chromatographic column is adjusted by a pressure regulator PR, Fig. 1, and the desired flow-rate is set by a dial D which adjusts a cam C connected to a variable restriction V. Upon closing a switch S an electric motor M is energized to rotate the cam C through gearing GB; when the maximum flow-rate is attained a stop X opens a microswitch MS to de-energize the motor so providing a constant flow-rate. If the stop X is positioned clear of the micro-switch or a further stop is provided, a cyclic change of flow-rate results. A pressure controller DP is disposed downstream of the restriction. The restriction may take the form of a piston 2 Fig. 3 (not shown), with a tapered flat F and restricted inlet and outlet ducts Dl, D2; a third duct D3 is provided so that a constant-pressure gas urges a piston roller 3 against the cam C, Fig. 1. Another form of restriction, is comprised by a cylindrical rod 7 Fig. 4 (not shown), with a flat F coacting with a duct D2, the rod depending from a carrier 8 the rod end of which has a sealing ring 11 to fully close-off the duct D2. The carrier 8 is coupled to a piston 2 through a ball 13 and a loading spring 10. The device may be used to control flow to a chromatographic column in which the carrier is a liquid; in this case the restriction has one inlet sequentially connected to each one of a series of outlets of gradually varying flow-resistance.
