Abstract

1,084,857. Mixing fluid streams. NORD-AVIATION SOCIETE NATIONALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS AERONAUTIQUES. Oct. 12, 1964 [May 27, 1964], No. 41653/64. Heading B1C. [Also in Division F1] Fluid streams e 3 e 4 converge on at least two aerodynamically shaped pivotable flaps v 1 , V 2 whereby intense mixing takes place in the zone between the flaps and complete mixing in a zone z at a short distance a downstream of the point of convergence. The cross-section of the flaps is wedge-shaped in a plane at right angles to the pivotal axis x<SP>1</SP> x<SP>2</SP> tapering away from the axis; the edges via and v2a are similar to the leading edge of an aircraft wing and the cross-section parallel to the pivotal axis is that of an aerofoil. The pivotal axes of the flaps may be staggered and the flaps may partially overlap (see Fig. 9, not shown). More than two fluid streams may be mixed, see Fig. 5 (not shown). The flaps may point upstream instead of downstream as shown. As applied to a combined by-pass turbo-jet and ram-jet, Fig. 6 the turbo-jet by-pass air e 4 and the ram-jet air e 3 are mixed in the zone z by flaps the extremities of which may seal on the boundary walls c 1 , c 2 (see also Fig. 7, not shown); if the flaps overlap and all are applied against one of the walls either ram-jet air or by-pass air alone may be supplied to the combustion chamber b. Owing to the intensive mixing the apparatus can be relatively short so that the combustion chamber is located approximately in the plane of the turbine outlet.
