Abstract
1,084,523. Television; cathode-ray tube displays. FERRANTI Ltd. Dec. 3, 1965 [Nov. 16, 1964], No. 46643/64. Headings H4F and H4T. [Also in Division G1] The display on the partially reflecting faceplate (11, Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) of a cathoderay tube is " viewed " through an arrangement comprising either a triangular prism (13, Fig. 1), or a Fresnel prism (13), Fig. 2, so arranged in relationship to a hood (16) that extraneous light not prevented by the hood from falling on the " viewing " surface of the prisms is diverted away from the field of view (18). Distortion in the form of compression of the display in the vertical direction by the prism of Fig. 1 is corrected by the deflection circuitry associated with the tube. The " observer " (17) may be a human observer or may have the form of a television camera or a photographic camera. The position (17) may be occupied by an optical projection when it is desired to superimpose an image on the display. The direction of view of the apparent image plane (19, Fig. 1) may be changed by means of further prisms preferably made integral with prism (19). The source of the display may be constituted by a meter or other indicator having a transparent cover instead of by cathode-ray tube.
