Abstract

1,084,386. Sheet collators. R. G. LOWE. Sept. 30, 1965 [Nov. 12, 1964], No. 41529/65. Heading B6H. The sheet collating apparatus as described in Specification 946,975 is modified in that the sheet collating is controlled automatically by a perforated record tape 33 coacting with contactors 40 ... 44 to permit any preselected number of printed sheets to be inserted in the pockets 38 (Fig. 2) of the collator drum 20. The record tape is punched selectively with perforations 45 in five rows, contactor 40 indexing the drum stepwise a distance equivalent to one pocket and the pocket dwells at one position adjacent the sheet delivery end of the sheet conveyer belt 36 until the respective number of sheets has been deposited in the pocket. The number of sheets deposited in the pocket may be controlled by perforations 45 if the number is small or by auxiliary counters 69 (Fig. 1), connected in series and actuated in sequence, by auxiliary counter contactor 44. Unwanted sheets are deposited in a tray 19, by a switch 37 actuated by a gate sheet contactor 41. Sheets passing into the pockets 20 or tray 19 are counted by switches 89, 99 and send their output signal to count down switches which are reset to emit a signal which is sent either to the pocket indexing control circuit or gate sheet control circuit.
