Abstract

1,084,282. Filter material. TECALEMIT (ENGINEERING) Ltd. May 8, 1964 [May 10, 1963], No. 18591/63. Heading B1T. [Also in Division D1] A filter element, suitable for an i.c. engine air filter, comprises at least one layer of an intermingled mass of fibres having a plurality of filaments made of a different material extending at least partly through the fibrous mass, and is made by injecting the filamentary material into the fibrous mass through moving hollow needles. The fibrous material may be a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile as described in Specification 1,027,333. The filaments strengthen the fibrous mass and improve the adherence of oil used to coat the fibres. In apparatus for making the elements, the press 3 contains liquid cellulose acetate composition; hollow injection needles 6 penetrate the fibrous mass 1 after which the press 3 is slowly raised and the liquid composition forced out through the needles 6 to form cellulose acetate strands 7. The needles may be moved during withdrawal so as to form zigzag or helical filaments.
