Abstract

1,083,941. Washing machines. VALCOX CORPORATION. June 10, 1965 [May 14, 1965], No. 24619/65. Heading D1A. An automatic washing machine, comprising an airtight container consisting of a flexible bladder 26 mounted on an imperforate tub 24 which contains a perforated tub 20, includes a pump 32 to withdraw fluid from the container and return it under pressure through a venturi type aspirator and suction means for collapsing the bladder 26 on to the material being washed to remove excess fluid therefrom. The machine housing 11 has a horizontal partition 17 to which are secured, in a water tight joint, the flanges 22, 25, 27 of tubs 20, 24 and bladder 26 and a reinforcing member 28 disposed round bladder 26. Water is fed into tub 24 through line 30 controlled by valve 31 and is circulated by pump 32 whose inlet is connected with a sump 35 in the lower part of tub 24 through a normally open solenoid operated valve 34 and whose outlet is connected with a header 37 carrying the aspirators 38. Two aspirators are mounted to impart a horizontal rotating movement to the water in the tubs whereas the third imparts a vertical circulating movement. Each aspirator comprises a cylindrical bore 40 leading through a frusto-conical inlet portion 41 and a throat 42 to a frusto-conical outlet portion 43, a ring 44 in throat 42 having a sharp edge to cause strong negative pressure in portion 43. Air is introduced through orifice 46 connected by hose 49 to the top of bladder 26 and passage of liquid through the aspirators draws the air into the liquid. A T-coupling 50 in line 36 containing a filter (52) Fig. 8 (not shown) is connected to drain line 51 controlled by solenoid operated valve 54 and a solenoid operated valve 53 is provided above coupling 50 in line 36. The inlet side of the pump is connected to a tank 56 and to drain line 54 through pipe line 59 controlled by solenoid valve 60. An aspirator nozzle (61) mounted in a sleeve (62) Fig. 6 (not shown) forming part of pipe line 59 is connected by a pipe line 63, controlled by a solenoid operated valve 63<SP>1</SP> to the bottom of tub 24 through line trap 84 so that suction may be applied to container 24, 26 by the pump. Excess. air from tank 56 escapes through line 65 which is also connected through solenoid operated valve 66 with tub 20. A door 70 provided in the housing 10 is connected by a link to an imperforate door 77 in the outer tub 24 which carries, on braces 80 a segment 79 of the inner tub 20, a passageway 81 being provided between the housing and tub 24. A lint trap or filter 80<SP>1</SP> located in sump 35 comprises a screen 81 mounted on a rod 82 projecting out of housing 11 and having a handle 83 Fig. 3 (not shown) so that the screen can be reversed while dirty water is being discharged to wash out the lint and other foreign matter. In operation, articles to be washed are placed in tub 20 with soap, detergents or the like and then the automatic cycle commences. Water to the required level is supplied to the container and is circulated by the pump for a predetermined time. The articles are then rinsed and after the last rinse cycle water flows from tank 56 through line 57 pump 32 and line 59 back to tank 56 and hence passes through aspirator nozzle 61 to suck the air out of the bladder 26 which then applies pressure to the clothes and squeezes excess water therefrom.
