Abstract

1,083,461. Means retaining sleeves on shafts. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Jan. 25, 1965 [Jan. 23, 1964], No. 2952/64. Addition to 994,987. Heading F2U. Means retaining a sleeve 1 on a shouldered shaft 2, particularly a roll sleeve on a cantilever mill shaft, comprises a nut 6 in screw-threaded engagement with a locking ring 26 having internal radial bayonet lugs 27 co-operating with external bayonet lugs 4 on the end of a reduced part 3 of the shaft. In operation, the engaged nut and locking ring are passed over the end of the shaft part 3, the lugs 27 passing between the lugs 4, and the nut is then rotated in one direction to effect, in sequence: (i) rotation of the ring until the lugs 27 are aligned with external bayonet lugs 4 on the shaft part 3, such ring rotation being limited by engagement of long axial limbs extending from the lugs 27 with one set of radial edges of the lugs 4; (ii) leftward screwing of the nut along the ring until the nut engages the sleeve 1; (iii) rightward axial movement of the ring, the nut meeting resistance to forward movement, until the lugs 27 engage backs 5 of the lugs 4, short axial limbs extending from the lugs 27 then engaging with the opposite set on radial edges of the lugs 4 so that the ring is held from rotation in either direction relative to the shaft; and (iv) screwing up of the nut tightly against the sleeve. As shown, the nut is circumferentially looked to the shaft by a plunger 14 radially slidable in the shaft. When the nut is tightened up and a spring-loaded retaining pin 21 withdrawn, the plunger is urged, by a spring 17, into engagement with one of slots 12 in a plate 11 secured to the nut. When the shaft rotates, the spring 17 is assisted by centrifugal force. The nut acts on the sleeve 1 through a thrust ring 7 and a dished washer 9 which prevents j jamming of the screw by differential thermal expansion between the sleeve and the shaft and facilitates the entry of the plunger 14 into a slot 12. In Figs. 5-10 (not shown), the dished washer 9 is dispensed with, the spring-urged plunger and slot circumferential locking means is provided between the nut and the locking ring, and the nut is provided with C-spanner projections.
