Abstract
A filter element, for use in a cigarette, cigar or pipe, comprises activated carbon granules bonded together by polyethylene, polypropylene or a mixture or copolymer thereof. The carbon may constitute 50-95% of the element by weight, and minor amounts of natural, synthetic or metal fibres, fibrous carbon or comminuted wood pulp may be included. The carbon granules are much larger than the plastics particles, which are applied in powder form (50 microns diameter) or in an aqueous emulsion. The granules and plastics may be extruded as a rod, with heating to soften the plastics bonding the granules together. Alternatively the carbon/plastics mixture is formed on a belt which is deformed to form it into a rod and heated, or the mixture is entrained in a gas stream and fed into a forming tube where it is bonded by injecting steam.
