Abstract

1,082,496. Forming glass fibre mats. GLASWERK SCHULLER G.m.b.H. July 10, 1964 [July 11, 1963], No. 28685/64. Headings DIN and D1R. Apparatus for the production of mats of glass fibres includes a cutting device and one or more delivery tubes along which the cut fibres are blown, each tube having its orifice adapted to carry out a rectilinear traversing motion. In the form of apparatus shown, rovings enter a cutting device 4 at the positions 5 and the cut fibres are blown into a delivery tube 9 by an air stream generated by the rotary knives and supplemented by a fan 7. The tube 9 is slidably mounted on a pivot 14 and guided in a rectilinear traversing motion by guides 12. At the orifice end 16 of the tube there is connected a tube section 17 of larger diameter in such manner that ambient air enters the section 17 to ensure disintegration of glass fibre clumps. A suction drum 20 transports fibres to a conveyor belt 1. A modification has the delivery tube almost wholly enclosed in a tube of larger diameter. In another arrangement, the cut fibres are deposited directly on a conveyor belt from more than one discharge tube. The movements of the discharge tubes are so phased that fibres are simultaneously laid in different lateral positions on the conveyor belt. Baffles are provided at the ends of the tubes. Mats having layers of fibres of different lengths or fineness may be formed. To reduce electrostatic charging, the air conveying the cut fibres has its moisture content increased.
