Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises (1) an organic solvent solution of a chloroprene polymer which is either (a) a copolymer of chloroprene with a vinyl monomer containing a carboxyl group and in which the carbon-to-carbon double bond is activated by an adjacent carboxyl group, keto-carboxyl group or nitrile and with, if desired, at least one further comonomer, the copolymer containing 0.02 to 0.7% carboxyl groups or (b) a mixture of such a copolymer, but containing up to 1% of carboxyl groups, with another chloroprene polymer, the mixture containing 0.02 to 0.4% of carboxyl groups, (2) an oil-soluble phenolaldehyde resin in amount of 10-100 parts per 100 chloroprene polymer and (3) magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, calcium sulphide and/or lead oxide at least equivalent to 2 parts of magnesium oxide per 100 parts chloroprene polymer. Acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, a mixture of methacrylic acid and 2,3-dichloro-1-3-butadiene and a mixture of methacrylic acid and acrylonitrile are copolymerized with chloroprene examples. Thermoplastic phenolaldehyde resins which may be used include furfural-phenolic resins and phenolic-modified-coumarone-indene resins especially terpene-modified phenolic resins, preferably used in amounts from 20 to 70 parts per 100 chloroprene polymer, but heat-reactive phenolic resins, e.g. the reaction product of 1-2 moles formaldehyde with a phenol substituted in the para-position, e.g. p-t.-butyl phenol. The usual chloroprene adhesive and coating solvents may be used, preferably blends of two or more organic solvents, e.g. aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The usual antioxidants, fillers, pigments and, if desired, curing agents may also be present. The compositions are used for coatings and adhesives.
