Abstract
Wet process H3PO4 is purified by evaporating it in a submerged combustion or analogous evaporator to 80% by weight P2O5 content, thereby forming insoluble compounds of the impurities, diluting the conc. acid to a filterable viscosity and removing the solids therefrom. The purified acid may be reconcentrated in a second evaporator. The solids, which may be separated by e.g. filtration or decantation, may be washed with H2O which is then added to the purified acid. The solids, claimed per se, comprise poly- and meta-phosphates of Al and Fe. These solids may be digested with HCl to forming the chlorides and H3PO4 values, the latter being removed by solvent extraction or ion exclusion, or the solids may be fused with KCl to give KPO3. The gaseous effluent from the evaporators may be condensed, e.g. as described in Specification 1,081,891, and the H3PO4 recovered. Organic impurities may be removed from the impure acid by adding small mounts of an oxidant, e.g. HNO3, KNO3, before concentration.
