In a batch weighing apparatus of the type in which the flow of granular, powdered, or liquid material from a feeder 2, Fig. 1, is shut off by a gate 3 when the output from a load cell 4 equals a voltage preset by dials 7 (in known manner), a further voltage is introduced to advance the time of shut-off, by an amount depending upon the preset weight in order to allow for the weight of the material still falling between the gate and the hopper. The dials 7, in addition to presetting a voltage corresponding to the required weight, operate switches S1 S2 and S3, Fig.2, which apply a voltage, indicated at S3, to any one of the twenty positions on a uniselector U1, the transistorcontrolled wiper of which is mechanically coupled to the wiper of a switch U2. The switch U2 connects an appropriate secondary tapping of a transformer TR via a variable resistor VR, to a potential divider R1 R2 the output P being added to the load cell output 4 (Fig. 1). VR is adjusted in accordance with the density of the material, and the arrangement is such that the voltage on the selected tapping is large for a small preset weight (7), and vice versa since the more material there is in the hopper, the shorter is the column of material still falling from the gate. The required weight information may be fed into the apparatus by means of punched cards, or tape; and the entire apparatus may be mechanical instead of electrical.
