Abstract

1,081,243. Conveyers. RAPIDS-STANDARD CO. Inc. Feb. 17, 1966 [March 4, 1965], No. 7013/66. Heading B8A. [Also in Division B7] A conveyer comprises a bed along which articles are pulled by dogs having camming members thereon which when they come into contact with preceding articles force the dogs out of engagement with the articles they are pulling. As described, the bed comprises rollers 11, Fig. 2, but may be formed by conveyer wheels or a slideway. The dogs 22 are pivotally mounted on an endless chain 14 having an upper run supported in a channel 20 and a return run supported in a channel (21), Figs. 1 and 8 (not shown), and the camming members are formed by a pair of wheels 27 on each dog which is biased to the raised position by a spring (30), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). As the chain 14 passes round a terminal sprocket (33), Fig. 7 (not shown), a curved bifurcated guide (35) is engaged by the wheels 27 to press the dogs against their spring bias. A similar guide may be provided at the other end of the chains 14. The articles are pallets (40), Fig. 9 (not shown), having openings (41) for engagement by the dogs 22, the leading edges of the pallets having a reinforcing steel bar (43). Alternatively, the pallets may have depending flanges for engagement with the dogs 22, the flanges being narrow enough to pass between the wheels 27. In a second embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), the wheels 27 are replaced by a ramp (27a). In a third embodiment, Figs. 11, 12 (not shown), each dog engages the pallets by means of a pressure pad (44) having a highfriction upper surface, e.g. of rubber. In a fourth embodiment, Figs. 13, 14 (not shown), the dogs (50) are mounted on a belt (14a) and consist of arms moulded from a resilient material which may be reinforced, e.g. by a resinous metallic woven or stranded fabric. The camming members consist of shoulders (51) surfaced with metallic shields (52). The articles are engaged by fingers (25a) which may be integral with the dogs or of a more rigid material, e.g. metal, secured to the dogs. The latter may be bonded to the belt, and have leaf springs (54) moulded thereinto.
