Abstract

The invention relates to penicillins of general Formula I <FORM:1081093/C2/1> in which R is H, a straight or branched chain alkyl containing 1 to 12 C atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl radical, or an aralkyl radical; and non-toxic salts thereof with metals, ammonium, amines and tetracyclines aminomethylated at the 2-amido group. A penicillin of general Formula I or a salt thereof, is prepared by reacting 6-[D(-)alpha-(aminophenylacetamido)] penicillanic acid or a salt thereof in water (salts) or an organic solvent (free acid) with an aldehyde of formula <FORM:1081093/C2/2> where R has the above meaning. Typical compounds are 6-[D(-)alpha-(methylene amino phenylacetamido)] penicillanic acid, 6-[D(-) alpha - (benzylidene amino phenylacetamido)]-penicillanic acid and 6-[D(-)alpha-(salicylidene amino phenylacetamido)] penicillanic acid, The penicillins are effective against penicillinase-producing bacteria. They are used in therapeutic compositions for human or veterinary use.
