Abstract

1,081,006. Shaft furnaces. MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT Inc. April 27, 1965 [June 11, 1964], No. 17734/65. Heading F4B. Material introduced by a hopper 14 into a shaft furnace 10 for calcining limestone &c. passes in turn through a preheating section 20 in countercurrent to waste gases from a calcining section 30, through the latter co-currently with heating gases produced in a downwardly disposed burner chamber 38, and finally through a cooling section 40 in countercurrent to cooling air introduced through the rotary cooling grate 45, the preheating and calcining zones being connected by restrictive passageways 22. Hot air drawn from the cooling zone through ports 42 and a bustle 47 is delivered by a fan 56 to the burner chamber 38. A small proportion (20%) of gases from the calcining section escape upwardly through the passageways 22, but the major part (80%) pass through ports 39, bustle 36, duct 26, bustle 25 and ports 24 into the preheating section from which a fan 2 extracts them through a transverse conduit 28. The restrictive passages which may approximate in area to 25% that of the shaft may be replaced by a waist formed in the shaft, Fig. 5 (not shown), in which case burners open out into the annular space formed below the waist.
