Abstract
1,080,669. Ladle stoppers. VESUVIUS CRUCIBLE CO. Dec. 10, 1965 [Dec. 18, 1964], No. 52619/65. Heading F4B. A stopper for a ladle or similar receptacle has a stopper head 3 and a plurality of protective sleeves 15 of refractory material which may be applied over the bottom of the stopper rod 7 without necessitating the removal of nuts 13 and washer 14. This is achieved by making the stopper rod 7 which is used to hold the assembly together so that both the flange 8 and the upper section 10 have transverse dimensions of the same order but smaller than the bore 16 of the sleeves 15, the said flange being joined to section 10 by a narrower section 9. The stopper head contains a well 4 having a circular bottom portion 5 and an internally threaded part 6 of slightly larger transverse dimensions, the threads extending to the top of the well. Each sleeve has a central projection 18 at its upper end adapted to enter a countersunk 17 in the lower end of the adjacent sleeve. The rod with its surrounding sleeves, and the stopper head are maintained assembled by externally threaded insert 20 which is screwed into the internally threaded well 4 of the head 3 so as to rest on the flange 8 leaving a diametrically larger portion 22 projecting above the top of the head. The said portion 22 of the insert then enters the countersunk 17 of the lowermost sleeve as shown. With nuts 13 in position shown the stopper is assembled by first applying over the bottom of the rod the required number of sleeves 15. The insert 20 which is in sections is then applied laterally to portion 9 and finally the head 3 is screwed on.
