Abstract
Aqueous resin compositions are prepared by reacting a maleinized oil (the reaction product of an unsaturated oil with maleic anhydride) with ammonia or an aliphatic amine and formaldehyde in the presence of a water-miscible organic solvent; the product is dissolved in an aqueous medium. The maleinized oil may be maleinized linseed oil. The solvent may be an alcohol ROH in which R is a C1-C6 alkyl group or an alkoxy substituted derivative thereof, e.g. butanol or butoxy ethyl alcohol. Reaction may take place at 60-135 DEG C. and the pH of the reaction mixture may be from 6.5 to 7.5. The maleinized oil may be subjected to partial hydrolysis before reaction. The final product may have a pH from 7.2 to 8.0. The resins are suitable for preparing pigmented or unpigmented coatings and paints which may be applied by electrodeposition.
