Abstract

1,080,176. Laminates and laminating; sheet forming. MONSANTO CO. Feb. 18, 1965 [Feb. 19, 1964], No. 7048/65. Headings B5A and B5N. Shaped laminated articles, e.g. seats and items of luggage, are made by coating a thermoplastic base sheet with adhesive such as polyurethane, covering the sheet with a thermoplastic fabric, and heating and shaping the layers in a mould. The thermoplastic material may be styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, polythene, polypropylene or polymethyl methacrylate, and the fabric may be woven or knitted of nylon, acrylic or polyester fibrous material. A layer of polyurethane or other foam may be included between the base sheet and the fabric, heat being applied to both faces of the laminate while or before moulding. Shaping may be effected between matched moulds or by suction moulding. Where a woven nylon fabric is used the nylon threads are not drawn, or fully drawn, and the fabric has raised warps forming a wearresistant pattern; the wefts may be of acrylic threads. A knitted nylon fabric may have bulking acrylic threads laid in the courses. In apparatus used (Figs. 1-6, not shown), the layers are laid on a frame (17) supporting a female mould (15) and are heated above only, or both above and below, by a radiant heater or heaters such as (19) slidable into operative position on rails (20). A male mould (13) is vertically operable by plunger mechanism (14).
